GUNTUR: Amid the excitement of Slum Dog Millionaire’s dream run in this year’s Oscars, few may have taken notice of the award-winning short documentary ‘Smile Pinki- A Real-World Fairy Tale’, capturing the moments in the life of Pinki, one of the millions who have benefited by the modern miracle of cleft lip surgery. A Guntur-based plastic surgeon G.S. Satish Kumar and also the project director of Smile Train, Guntur, is as excited as any one associated with the project. “Being part of the project, which has brought back smiles on the faces of thousands of children and adults, and performing over 1,300 free cleft lip and palate surgeries had given me immense satisfaction,” Dr. Satish told The Hindu on Friday. The plastic surgeon, along with Subodh Kumar Singh, plastic surgeon, who performed the cleft surgery on Pinki, chaired a session at the 8th Annual Conference of Indian Society of Cleft Lip Palate and Craniofacial Anomalies at JIPMER in Pondicherry. Dr. Satish, a practicing plastic surgeon at Dr. G.V.Krishna Rao Hospital on the Club Road, said that children born with the defect continue to suffer from low self esteem and generally poorly nourished. Most of the people still do not have awareness over this problem, he said and appealed to the people to make use of the opportunity being provided by the Smile Train to undergo free surgeries.
