Staff Reporter

GUNTUR: A Guntur-based plastic surgeon has improvised a technique of treating `diabetic foot’ and help closure of wound with the help of plastic surgery.

A plastic surgeon GSS Satish Kumar added a timer device to the machine in the Vacuum Assisted Closure method of treating, which phenomenally reduced the length of hospitalization and cost of treatment went down by 50 per cent.

Displaying the technique at his hospital here on Monday, Dr. Satish explained that suction at regular intervals reduced the chances of pus formation and early drying of the ulcers making them conducive to closure through grafting. “I am following this methodology for the past one year and at least 25 patients benefited out of this,” he said.

A technical paper on subject presented at the State-level conference of Andhra Pradesh Plastic Surgeons Association in NRI Hospital won him the best paper award also from among 25 entries. Five of the 25 were short listed for the award, but his paper was voted as the best.

Advantages

Explaining the advantages of equipment and procedure, which hopes would be adopted more number of surgeons for treating ulcers, Dr. Satish pointed out that virtually daily dressing of wound can be done away with making it a once in three-day affair. The need for staying in hospital will come down as the equipment could be used at home also. In Western countries the VAC treatment costs $ 120 a day and for that amount with procedure entire treatment could be completed in Guntur, was his contention.
